The virtual exhibition “Form Foundations: Figure Studies by Marshall M. Fredericks” features twenty-five newly conserved figure study drawings. You will see before and after photos of the drawings, and see how the conservation process brings new life to these important figure studies. Tour the exhibition through the virtual 360-degree environment, explore the drawings, view Fredericks’s drawing table complete with the actual tools he used, and learn about the art and science of conservation. There are also opportunities for you to get creative with hands-on drawing activities and museum label writing.
This exhibition has been over a decade in the making! In 2010 the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to identify specific drawings from the collection most in need of conservation treatment. Out of 129 drawings, these 25 were selected as the best representative studies for many of the Marshall Fredericks’s figurative sculptures. They also illustrate Fredericks’s creative process of sculpture making, and offer an essential record of his human figure design. Over the last three years, these drawings were conserved by the Midwest Art Conservation Center with grant support from the Institute of Museums and Library Services.
We have several programs lined up including live figure drawing sessions via Zoom, a lecture on the conservation process by the conservator who treated Fredericks’s drawings, and guided virtual tours and field trips of the exhibition. Check out the Calendar of Events to register today!
