Being present since the inception of the culture as b girls, graff writers, label owners, party promoters, deejays and emcees! Women are an integral part of hip hop culture.  Women have been tasked with showing and proving they are better than their male counterparts in all elements of hip hop culture while navigating the deep rooted misogyny in the culture.  There is no question that MC Sha Rock was first woman in hip hop to rock stages with her superior skill set as an emcee earning her place as a pioneer of hip hop culture. As a member of the Funky 4 plus 1, she was the first female to be signed to a record label and to be on national TV when Debra Harry of the punk rock group Blondie invited them to perform on Saturday Night Live in 1981.  The material displayed in this section represent some of the great woman of hip hop including MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt n Pepa, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, and Lil Kim.
