PEDESTAL series
This series is a dystopian view on what art could look like in a world void of artistic expression and freedom. The tallest sculpture, Pedestal #1 has an engraved plaque that states “1 of 3 carved objects discovered on the North American continent of Earth.” Beltchenko argues that the arts are the matrix and core foundation of human empathy.  Art encapsulates and makes possible reasonable communication throughout the history of humankind. The limestone has been carved to resemble human bone forms implying the degradation of honest artistic communication.  The pedestals are made of steel vein structures that are bare, out of balance and leaning uncomfortably on edge, as if about to topple over.  This is a representation of art in a world where the voice of art has been suffocated and injured through political interests, either intended or unintended, to a point of near death.
