HISTORY LESSONS series
This powerful body of work is part cautionary tale and part environmental query. Why do we insist on building and rebuilding in places - from flood zones and forest area prone to wildfires - in an attempt to defy the natural world? Why do we fail to recognize that Mother Nature always wins? As shepherds to this planet the artist compels us to be mindful of the environment and embrace our roles in it. He asks that we release the arrogance that drives us to build and do whatever we want to the environment regardless of the consequences. The HISTORY LESSON series metaphorically begs the question: why do we fail to learn from our past?
Steel, brass and limestone carved to look like concrete structures are the ghosts of a man-made world in decay. The metals protrude from and through the concrete-appearing structures as Mother Nature inevitably reclaims the world; however, it is not without beauty. Mother Nature is beautiful even in its destruction, which gives it a huge edge over humanity.
