DISTRESS series
This three-piece series is based on botanical drawings of artist/botanist illustrations from hundreds of years ago. The black forms are pieces of found bark, branches and light weight trunks cut apart by Beltchenko and reassembled. Black rubber paint is applied as a wash of color, like an oil slick symbolizing dark death seeping into every pore of the natural world. Painted brass “band-aid” additions resembling “tape” represent the quick and temporary fixes that this government is throwing at our planet’s problems. The international distress signal in Morse code of “SOS” or …_ _ _ … (dot, dot, dot, dash, dash, dash, dot, dot, dot) is lightly repeated in the background in pencil.

Overall, these works are attempting to illuminate the darkness of the current environment situation.
