On May 19, 2020, seven inches of rainfall was enough to breach the Edenville Dam, which led to its total collapse, resulting in a “500-year” flood. This disaster also took out the nearby Sanford Dam and devastated the Midland area, causing houses to be flooded and the lakes to be drained.

As the dam failed, the deluge of water and debris washed away an entire section of forest, southwest of Wixom lake, completely changing the shape of the landscape and the course of the river.

Exploring this strange and scarred landscape over the, days, weeks and months, since this not-so natural disaster, afforded me the rare sensation of being one of the first people to traverse a landscape, and to witness nature’s process of regrowth and renewal.

My artworks in this exhibition are an attempt to reckon with this disaster and the awe-inspiring landscape left in its wake, in a variety of media: oil painting, casting, diorama and video.
